Say goodbye to the times when Nollywood movies were considered subpar. Now, the Nigerian movie scene brings all the fun, excitement, and perfection while meeting up to societal standards. New concepts and ideas are now being introduced.
This year, there have been a lot of movies worth the hype. Here we’ve picked out the top 5 Nollywood movies that have left us wowed, in no particular rating.
1. Blood Sisters
First on the list! And it’s also the first Netflix Nigeria Original Series.
This Nigerian movie directed by Biyi Bandele is currently the best Nollywood movie on Netflix.
Blood sisters is a four-part movie series that portrays the ills of domestic violence, family dilemma and social dilemma. The movie stars Inidima Okojie as Sarah, one in thousands of Nigerian women who undergo domestic violence in silence. Other major and interesting faces to look forward to are; Kate Henshaw, Deyemi Okanlawon, Nancy Isime, Gabriel Afolayon, Kehinde Bankole and Genoveva Umeh amongst others.
2. Blood Covenant
Here’s another top Nollywood movie. It addresses the societal ills of Nigeria like greed, corruption, lust for money and ritual killings. The movie is quite realistic and interesting, starring celebrities like Tobi Bakre, Shawn Faqua, Erica Nlewedim, Omowunmi Dada and Alex Ekubo amongst others.
3. Man of God
This was a highly- anticipated movie that didn’t disappoint eager viewers.
The storyline talks about a young boy who defies his harsh religious background to live as he pleases. This is yet another common occurrence in Nigeria; Scenes where parents use religion as a moral yardstick for their children.
The movie was directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters and the main character was played by Akah Nnani with support from other actors/actresses like Osas Ighodaro, and Mawuli Gavor.
4. King of thieves
So far, this is the highest grossing Nigerian movie following a massive patronage in Cinemas.
If you’ve seen this movie, you already know some funny slang words that were used in it.
This is a Yoruba-English movie that follows the usual plot of Yoruba movies, but this time with better direction and production units.
It’s a thriller that tells the story of a notorious robber, Agesinkole, who seeks revenge by disturbing the peace of a small town, Ajeromi.
The main character is played by Femi Adebayo, and supported by Odunlade Adekola, broda shaggi and Toyin Abraham.
5. Foreigner’s God
This intriguing Nollywood movie answers the question of the White Man and Nigerian history. The movie is set in the early 1940s, reflecting the life and times of Igbo, especially their customs, myths and philosophy.
In Foreigner's God, a white man’s curiosity about the eastern God leads him to the eastern part of the country. After witnessing some traditions and customs, he decides to bring some change to the community. The white man was played by Henry Coxe, and supported by Inidima Okojie, Eucharia Anunobi, Bamike Olawumi(BamBam), and Frank Donga amongst others.
We are halfway through the year and we’ve already gotten enough movies to fill our screens. We can’t wait to see more of what the movie industry has for us.
